This week, a police officer attached to the presidential escort unit was found dead inside his assigned living quarters. His superiors suspect his death was due to suicide.
Dennis Kibet’s death still remains an open matter under investigation.
But, it joins a list of deaths of officers that have happened, especially those who have been assigned to the protective detail of William Ruto that stretches from his deputy presidency years.
The famous one was the murder of Sergeant Kenei, an officer who was manning one of the key guard posts at the Harambee Annex office of the Deputy Presidency.
Kenei’s murder was never solved because the politics of the time had poisoned the climate. This was the time when the ‘system’ was set against Ruto and was trying hard to undermine his presidential dreams.
And the killing happened right after the breaking of the 40 billion arms deal scandal that involved a former cabinet secretary, Rashid Echesa, and some Polish arms dealers, who were holding those meetings at the deputy president’s office.
Of course, the deal never went through at all. It was all a con job that fell flat.
But Kenei was the casualty of the fallout from that busted deal. He was killed by fellow officers who suspected that he might have known too much for his own good.
Or he must have leaked details about it too. No one knows for sure about what the Sergeant knew about the saga that ended up taking his life.
Ruto claimed that the whole thing was a set up to make him lose political support in his backyard (Kenei was Kalenjin) and that the DCI (under Kinoti) was playing politics with what should have been an open and shut murder investigation.
Rashid Echesa was never convicted for his role in the bungled con job.
